Gardening in Miniature – Saturday, January 12th 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. – Master Gardeners Juanita Kauffman and Bob Hyatt share their knowledge and expertise in creating gardens on a small scale for “Fairy Gardens” or “Railway Gardens”. Come learn proper care and maintenance of dwarf, compact, slow and low-growing, or tiny-leaved plants best suited for miniaturized landscapes, as well as general information about these fast growing hobbies. Contact the Extension Office at 263-9226 for more information and to register. The fee is $10.00.
  
 Winter Sowing – Saturday, January 19th 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. - Starting plants from seed outdoors in the winter?  It’s possible.  Learn the techniques involved with Winter Sowing from Master Gardener Karen Brown.  Join her and other Master Gardeners to learn how to sow seeds outdoors in recycled containers during the winter months and get a head start on the growing season. 3rd Annual Joint Meeting and Banquet of the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Association and the Franklin County Conservation District  - Friday, January 25th, 2013 at Solomon’s Lutheran Church, 4856 Wayne Road, Chambersburg.  Social hour starts at 6:15 p.m., with buffet dinner served at 7:00 p.m. This year we’re celebrating 100 years of the 4-H program.  Tickets are $12.50 for adults, $6.00 for children aged 5-11 (under 5 free) and are available at the Extension Office (263-9226), or the Conservation District Office (264-5499).  Reservation deadline is Wednesday, January 16th.
  
Toss Your Hat in the Ring - Penn State Extension is offering a workshop providing all the information you might need in order to run for local office. This is a two-hour interactive session designed to help you become involved in local government - your borough, township, or school district - by seeking elected or appointed office. The workshop will take place at the Franklin County Administrative Annex in Chambersburg on Wednesday, January 23 from 7-9 pm. The fee is $25.00. Register on-line at

Pennsylvania Water Resources Survey - This is your chance to be heard on the value and importance of water resources in Pennsylvania. The five-minute survey can be completed online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PaWater. The survey is open to Pennsylvania residents who are at least 18 years of age. It will remain open until February 28, 2013 and a summary of results will be published on the Pennsylvania Water Resources Research Center website in the Spring 2013 at: http://www.pawatercenter.psu.edu/.
  
Strong Women Winter 2013 Classes Forming – 3 locations:  Fayetteville (New Guilford Brethren in Christ) – Mondays and Wednesdays 01/07- 02/13 9:00 at 10:00 a.m.,  Shippensburg (Memorial Lutheran Church)– Tuesdays and Thursdays 01/08- 02/14 at 9:00a.m., and two sessions in Chambersburg (Chambersburg Church of the Brethren) Mondays and Wednesdays 01/07-02/13 at 5:45 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 01/08- 02/14 at 10:00 a.m.  Classes are 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes long. Annie’s Project - Annie’s Project is a national Cooperative Extension workshop series designed to empower women who are farm owners or partners, or thinking about becoming one. Annie’s Project will be offered this winter at Penn State Extension - Adams County in Gettysburg, PA on Tuesday nights from January 15 to March 19, 2013. The sessions focus on five areas – production, market, financial, legal, and human resources – and combine presentations, class discussion, individual and small group activities, and guest speakers who share the day-to-day application of proven techniques and strategies.  Annie’s Project will help you write a business plan for your farm and apply workshop information to daily operations.  Cost of the program is $75 per person for all eight sessions.
